4. Lay Counselor Certificate awarded upon completion of application, final exam, statement of faith and recommendation from a pastor or ministry leader.

Instructions for use of the Lay Counseling Training curriculum:
Lay Counseling Training CDs: Teaches how lay counselors can effectively intervene, support and refer hurting people family members, friends or church attendees who are struggling with personal and relational issues and/or may be in crisis. Presentation includes "R.E.A.L." helping skills. How to: Reach; Encourage; Assist and Lead people in crisis.
It is recommended that the student divide his or her study time into eight sessions covering the following material from the curriculum:
Session one: Lay Counseling Goals, Objectives and Qualifications.
Session two: Central Issues of Helping: Part one- Reach with Discernment (overview of symptoms for emotional and mental health issues).
Session three: Encourage with Hope, Assist with Truth, Lead with Resources.
Session four: Write out case scenarios in lay counseling manual and practice applying the REAL helping skills.
Session five: When to refer, Severity of Symptoms, Children and Teens, Crisis Situations.
Session six: Legal and Ethical Concerns/guidelines, Christian Counseling, Policies and Guidelines for Lay Counselors.
Session seven: Overcoming the Darkness of Domestic Violence presentation.
Session eight: Review confidentiality, skills and referral resources. Complete exam.
